Nyerere National Park is one of Tanzania’s great wilderness areas, forming the core of the former Selous Game Reserve in the southern safari circuit. It offers a quieter, more remote safari experience than the northern parks, with wide plains, miombo woodland, lakes and the mighty Rufiji River. A Nyerere National Park safari is especially rewarding for varied activities. Alongside classic game drives, many camps offer boat safaris on the Rufiji, where hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds are commonly seen. Depending on the camp and regulations, guided walking safaris may also be available.
Wildlife highlights include elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, lions, leopards and one of East Africa’s important African wild dog populations. The dry season from June to October is best for concentrated wildlife viewing, while the green season brings lush scenery and excellent birding.
Nyerere is usually reached by scheduled or charter flight from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar or Arusha, with road access from Dar es Salaam possible but much longer. It combines well with Ruaha National Park, Mafia Island or a beach stay on Zanzibar.

Rufiji River safaris
The Rufiji River is the signature feature of Nyerere, adding a different pace to classic game drives. Boat safaris are excellent for hippos, crocodiles, fish eagles, kingfishers and elephants coming to drink along the banks, especially in the dry season.

Dry season wildlife viewing
June to October is the most reliable period for concentrated wildlife sightings as animals gather around rivers, lakes and remaining water sources. This is a strong time for elephants, buffalo, giraffes, lions and possible African wild dog sightings.

Green season scenery and birds
From around November to May, the park becomes greener and more atmospheric, with dramatic skies, fewer vehicles and excellent birding. Some roads can be more challenging after rain, so camp choice and flight access matter more during this period.

Remote southern circuit feel
Nyerere is best suited to travellers who want a wilder, less crowded safari than the northern circuit. Distances are large and the experience works best with at least three nights, allowing time for game drives, river activities and relaxed exploration.

Access and safari combinations
Most visitors fly to Nyerere from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar or Arusha, which saves time and makes the park easy to combine with Ruaha, Mafia Island or a Zanzibar beach stay. Road access from Dar es Salaam is possible but much longer and better suited to adventurous itineraries.
