Mount Kilimanjaro route

Climb Brief

A mountain route shaped around pace, acclimatisation, and summit rhythm.

The Rongai Route is Kilimanjaro’s only main trail that approaches from the north, starting near the Kenyan border and crossing a quieter, drier side of the mountain. It is a good choice for trekkers who prefer a less crowded ascent with steady walking days.

The route passes through farmland, forest, moorland and high alpine desert before joining the summit trail to Uhuru Peak. Clear days can bring wide views across northern Tanzania and towards Amboseli in Kenya.

Rongai is often considered a gentler climb than some steeper routes, but summit night remains demanding and proper acclimatization is essential. Most itineraries descend on the Marangu side, giving a varied Kilimanjaro experience from north to southeast.

The Rongai Route typically takes 6–7 days, allowing for good acclimatization. It is one of the least crowded routes on Kilimanjaro, offering a wilderness feel. Trekkers should be prepared for cold summit night conditions and bring appropriate gear.
