Tarangire is a baobab-studded wilderness famous for large elephant herds, seasonal swamps, and rewarding dry-season game viewing with fewer crowds.
Tarangire National Park is one of the Northern Circuit’s most characterful safari destinations, known for ancient baobab trees, open savannah, river valleys, and seasonal wetlands. A Tarangire National Park safari offers exceptional dry-season game viewing from June to October, when the Tarangire River draws large elephant herds, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, and predators.
The park is also excellent for birding, with a wide range of raptors, ground birds, and wetland species. Its quieter atmosphere makes it a rewarding addition to safaris that include Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, or the Serengeti.
From November to May, the green season brings lush landscapes and superb birding, while wildlife spreads out. Tarangire’s ancient baobabs and varied habitats—from river valleys to seasonal swamps—give it a distinctive feel. It’s a practical first or last stop on the Northern Circuit, easily combined with other parks for a well-rounded Tanzania safari.
