A closer look at Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro

Climb Africa’s highest mountain, from rainforest trails to alpine desert and the snow-capped summit of Uhuru Peak.

Mount Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres in northern Tanzania, close to Moshi and within easy reach of Arusha. This free-standing volcanic peak is one of East Africa’s most iconic adventures and a premier Kilimanjaro trek destination.

Treks pass through changing climate zones, including montane forest, moorland, alpine desert, and the high summit zone. Popular routes include Machame, Marangu, Lemosho, Rongai, and the Northern Circuit, each with different scenery, length, and acclimatisation profile.

Kilimanjaro is often combined with a northern Tanzania safari to Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, or the Serengeti. Planning enough days for acclimatisation and recovery helps make the journey safer and more rewarding.

Best trekking seasons

Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but the most popular windows are January to early March and June to October, when trails are generally drier and summit views are often clearer. The long rains usually fall around April and May, while November can bring shorter rains, making trails wetter and visibility less reliable.

Route choice and acclimatisation

Routes vary in scenery, length, and acclimatisation profile. Machame and Lemosho are scenic camping routes with good altitude progression, Marangu uses mountain huts, Rongai approaches from the quieter northern side, and the Northern Circuit offers a longer, more gradual climb. Choosing enough days is one of the most important factors for comfort and summit success.

Changing mountain zones

A Kilimanjaro trek passes through distinct environments, from lush montane forest to moorland, alpine desert, and the cold summit zone near Uhuru Peak. Expect big changes in temperature and terrain, so layered clothing, proper boots, and preparation for cold summit-night conditions are essential.

Access and safari combinations

Most climbs start with a night in Moshi or Arusha, with Kilimanjaro International Airport offering the easiest arrival point. After the trek, many travellers add a northern Tanzania safari to Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, or the Serengeti, allowing time to recover after the descent.
